Jewish Music Festival

Yemen Blues

What do Yemen, Cuba, Odessa and Berkeley, California have in common? This week, it’s the wide-ranging, sound-bending, multi-cultural Jewish Music Festival.
The festival explores what it means to have the roots of Jewish sound in a multicultural world. Yemen Blues takes traditional Yemenite melodies and melds them with West African soul, jazz and funk. David Buchbinder’s Odessa Havana explores the shared bonds between Cuban and Jewish music that come from their common ancestry on the Iberian peninsula. Veretski Pass will perform their new composition Klezmer Shul, drawing on liturgical song as well as jazz and folk traditions.
How better to end a festival than with a dance party? You’ll love the all-ages klezmer dance party, and dance instructor Erik Bendix will help you along.
