Happy Birthday, Mr. Carter

Elliott CarterLast month, Elliott Carter turned 100 — and we’re happy to report, he is just as active as ever before. From the 1930s onwards, Carter has carefully considered and helped redefine — multiple times — what is meant by modernism in music. Here are just a few of the strands that have formed a part of his musical tapestry over the years:

1938: Pocahontas
1948: Cello Sonata
1964: Piano Concerto
1971: String Quartet No. 3
1976: A Symphony of Three Orchestras
1986: Oboe Concerto
1995: Esprit Rude/Esprit Doux II
1997: What Next?
2002: Boston Concerto
2006: Caténaires
