Festival Description

In March the International Choir Competition & Festival Budapest opens the INTERKULTUR year including 13 choral events. 19 countries in all will be represented by more than 60 choirs. Powerful choral atmosphere from March 24 to 28, 2013 is a safe bet.

It starts with the Opening Concert on March 24 and pieces by the contemporary Hungarian composers György Orbán and Levente Gyöngyösi, performed by the Budapest Academic Choral Society, Budapest Youth Choir and the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok, conducted by Gábor Hollerung.

From Germany there are eight choirs this year coming from Hesse, North Rhine-Westfalia, Lower Saxony, Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia including choirs like Ensemble Vocapella Limburg or the Chor der Leibniz Universität Hannover, who take part for the first time, but also old acquaintances like the concert choir of the Goethe Gymnasium Gera “Rutheneum”. This group became winner of the Mixed Choirs category at last year’s “Concorso Corale Internazionale” in Italy.

The singers enter the vocal competition in a total of six different categories, with or without compulsory pieces. They will be evaluated by international choral experts from Austria, Germany, Lithuania, Israel, Latvia, USA, and from the host country Hungary, according to the established Musica Mundi Evaluation System. The competitions will be held in the recently opened Music Center Budapest.

Patron of the event is the former president of the Republic of Hungary, Árpád Göncz. Honorary President is Kodály Zoltánné Péczely Sarolta, widow of the famous Hungarian composer Kodály Zoltán.
