Performance — Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Café Koster
  • About the Group
    • When in 1993 Mike & the Mellotones first entered the stage they were not only among the first to play blues Texas style, they were in many other ways a whole different act. While most Dutch bands played late 60s British blues wearing T-shirts and jeans and staring at their own bellybuttons, Mike & the Mellotones sported slick suits and slick hairdos looking the crowd straight in the eye and sounding tighter than Prince’s pants — or Pam Anderson’s bathing suit if that’s your particular preference. That was then. Today there’s a whole new, exciting blues movement in Europe that’s very much inspired by the music of Texas players like Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughan, tough West Coast bands like The Paladins and The Red Devils, and British bluesrockers The Hoax. Mike & the Mellotones have been at the forefront of that movement in the Netherlands and for eight years now they’ve been taking the message across Holland and abroad, playing in countries like Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, England, Ireland, and even Egypt. Mike & the Mellotones are by no means purists! Faced with all this new talent it is essential for Mike & the Mellotones to continue to reinvent themselves and stay fresh. This has made the style and sound of this power trio harder to define to the point where they now refer to their music as Nu Bluz. Through this open-minded approach Mike & the Mellotones manage to remain fixed at the top of the Dutch blues scene and gain respect from fellow musicians. Artists the band has recorded with so far include “Monster” Mike Welch, “Jumpin’” Johnny Sansone, Mike Morgan, Geoff Achison, and Gary Primich. Key words used in reviews to describe Mike & the Mellotones performances are energetic, tight, powerful, intense, entertaining, original. They reflect the band’s belief that musicianship and showmanship should go hand in hand and that blues needn’t be boring and depressing ‘old folks’ music. These guys are not about rehashing old blues stuff (although they carry a great deal of respect for the original guys). Instead they are about blowing off the dust by putting on a good show and doing something new and different with the music. For more information visit
