Festival Description

FREEDOM is Hull’s annual live music and arts Festival and a lasting legacy of the Wilberforce 2007 campaign which celebrated the pioneering work of Hull-born William Wilberforce MP and the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery.

Hull’s cultural extravaganza runs at various venues across the city centre offers a spectacular variety of free and ticketed music, dance, art, comedy and street-theatre shows lined up to perform at a number of indoor and outdoor venues across the city centre.

A hub of performance spaces in the historic area of the old Fruit Market — renamed FREEDOM Quarter for the duration of the festival – will include an eclectic mix of music across two live outdoor stages. A diverse range of live music — including ska, dance, soul, jazz, folk and gospel — from regional talent and international artists. Performances on the music stages are free of charge. A variety of live music, DJs, visual artists, VJs and films will be available at a number of indoor venues throughout the Freedom Quarter concluding with the FREEDOM Festival Closing Party on Sunday.

Festival Dates September 6 - 8, 2013

Programming 2013:
  • From international artists to large scale spectacle the 3 day event is jam-packed with acts jostling for space within a festival programme of music, art, dance, performance, comedy and much more. Headline acts come from the hotly-tipped Manchester guitar band The 1975, French street theatre pioneers Transe Express, MOBO award winning rap artist Akala and home grown comedian Lucy Beaumont. Don’t just take our word for it … download and digest the festival programme then share it with all your friends!
  • As well as a programme full of FREE events, this year’s festival will also showcase a number of ticketed shows. From the comedic antics of Pappy’s Last Show Ever (a smash hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012) to the surreal Baby Loves Disco (a daytime dance party for the under 8s) - the Festival Big Top really has something for everyone. Other ticketed shows include: BalletLORENT, Little Howard’s Big Show, Polarbear, Jonny Awsum, Lucy Beaumont, Freedom to Speak and The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey.
