Performance feature 2012:
Fare Well — The End of the World As We Know It OR Dancing Your Way to Paradise!
Participants — Maida Withers, concept/choreographer/dancer; Steve Hilmy, electronic composer/musician
    • Fare Well — The End of the World As We Know It OR Dancing Your Way to Paradise! — a project by Maida Withers Dance Construction Company that brings insight and vibrant critique to the contemporary issue of end time. Fare Well is as extreme in its moods and absurdities as we might think of “extreme weather.” We watch hypnotized, immobilized, arrogant, innocent, and powerful as the fires rage, volcanoes and oil erupt, the Arctic melts, the earth becomes parched, and the seas rise. Five Fare Well projects have been developed: New York City (Uncertain World); Nairobi, Kenya through the Cultural Envoy program with U.S. Department of State, U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, and the GoDown Arts Centre (Parched Earth - Remembrances from Tomorrow); Salt Lake City with Alex Caldiero, Utah Arts Festival (Fare Well & Hell-O); Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Tipping Point); Puebla/Cholula, Mexico for Preformatica, Kanab, Utah for Amazing EarthFEST, and at the Desert Festival in Las Vegas(Fare Well - The End of the World As We Know It OR Dancing Your Way to Paradise!). The solo, a distillation of the other projects, was performed for the Zagrebi! Festival in Zagreb, Croatia in September 2010 and at Dance Place (Washington, D.C.) November 2010. Fare Well has been supported, in part, by the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia, U.S. Department of State; ASCAP; U.S. Department of State Cultural Envoy Program, Nairobi, Kenya; the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts; The George Washington University Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, individuals.
Video feature 2012:
  • Thresholds CrossedMaida Withers Dance Construction Company
An evening-length multi media dance work, a kinetic fusion of East and West, that fearlessly explores the events, ideology and humanistic issues that link the US with the former Soviet Union and contemporary Russia. A bold and ground breaking work, Thresholds Crossed celebrates the bond between Russia and America, world super powers. Russian and American dancers share the stage in a highly charged interactive performance about our shared experiences with love of country, violence of war, sorrow for loss, and passion for life. Thresholds Crossed was created in the capital cities of Moscow (2005) and in Washington, DC (2006). Maida Withers and the Company have toured and been engaged in many projects in Russia since 1997. With this international project, the DC-based Dance Construction Company celebrated its 30th anniversary.
