Since 1985 the annual music festival has brought together national and international jazz musicians to Oklahoma City. Anita Arnold, Executive Director, Black Liberated Arts Center (BLAC), Inc. announces the launch of the 2011 Charlie Christian International Music Festival to engage the community in another successful event.

      Musicians, vocalists and the public are invited to a free jam session at Woody’s Sports Bar and Grill, 2501 N. E. 23rd Street. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and sit in with the house band, Organist Jeremy Thomas & Band will lead the way. Vocalists who want to “strut their stuff” are invited to the microphone to make their contribution to the fun!

      Anita Arnold, Executive Director, Black Liberated Arts Center (BLAC), Inc. says “We are thrilled to offer the Kevin Eubanks Concert as the project to engage the community and demonstrate that the community wants to be involved. Elements of the festival will come together in a unique way that offers the community an opportunity to participate.” A new addition to the concert will be the “Battle of the Bands on stage between Saxophonist Grady Nichols and Straight Ahead, all female quintet from Detroit prior to renowned Guitarist Kevin Eubanks taking the stage. The event begins promptly at 7:30pm at the Civic Center Music Hall in downtown Oklahoma City. A special ticket price for main floor seating to the Eubanks concert goes into effect immediately. Anyone purchasing tickets through the Civic Center box office before Tuesday, May 31st at 5:00 p.m. will be able to choose any seat on the main floor, with the exception of the orchestra pit, for a festival engagement price of $30. On Wednesday, regular prices of $40, $60, & $75 are in effect until show time on Thursday night prior to the performance. Venue — Civic Center Music Hall, at 7:30pm
  • June 3 — Unveiling of Jazz Appreciation & Cancellation Stamps

      On Friday morning, the festival continues at the Oklahoma History Center at 10:00 a.m. with the unveiling of the US Postal Service Jazz Appreciation Stamp and cancellation stamp with Charlie Christian’s name in the design. Sonya Dulan, US Postal Service official, said, “The Postal Service is happy to collaborate with BLAC, Inc. in the unveiling. The event has international outreach and becomes part of a national and international history. Kevin Eubanks and Postmaster James Bryant will participate in the program. Morris McCraven Trio will provide music. Students from Douglass High School and Dove Science Academy will participate in a photo shoot with Mr. Eubanks. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited. Admission is free. The event is sponsored in part by the Oklahoma City Chapter of Links, Inc. and the Friends of the Oklahoma Historical Society Archives. Anyone purchasing a two day wristband for $17 to the outdoor festival on June 3rd and 4th will receive a complimentary $20 ticket to the Kevin Eubanks concert. Wristbands must be purchased before Wednesday, June 1st at 5:00 p.m. at any of the following locations: Capitol Square Station, Charlie’s Jazz Rhythm & Blues Store, Hopkins HairCare, Learning Tree Toy Store and City Cuts and Design Group.

  • June 4 — Amazing Children
    • BLAC, Inc. is featuring the “Amazing Children,” children in performance program in this year’s 26th annual Charlie Christian International Music Festival on Saturday, June 4th at Bicentennial Park (in front of the Civic Center Music Hall) from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Children who have incredible skills in music, dance, martial arts, and skill solving games such as the Rubric Cube puzzle in less than two minutes will be featured in this fun filled, family activity. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. The public is invited.

  • A drawing will be held every hour for door prizes on Saturday, June 4th . Prizes include Visa Gift Cards, Savings Bonds, Cash and much more. Anita Arnold, author of “Oklahoma City Music: Deep Deuce and Beyond” will sign books all day on Saturday from 3:00pm until midnight as the celebration of the 95th birthday of Charlie Christian is celebrated this year. Great fun, music and more will make the week of May 31st – June 4th a week to remember.
