The folk festival was founded in 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri to celebrate traditional music from around the world. It is the oldest and longest running manifestation of its kind in the US. The music and cultural program takes place for three year stints in a major US city among numerous cities who compete for the honor to host the event. Nashville will host the festival over Labor Day Weekend from 2011 to 2013. The last time the festival was hosted in Music City (Nashville) was in 1959.
