Festival Description

Since 1978 Dance Umbrella, the contemporary dance festival has brought together innovative and exciting works from nationally and internationally acclaimed dancers. Several artists who have appeared at Dance Umbrella have contributed enormously to the vibrancy of the UK dance scene over the years. These individuals include Richard Alston, Jonathan Burrows, Rosemary Butcher, Merce Cunningham, Mark Morris and Stephen Petronio. Performances take place at festival venues throughout London.

Artist feature 2013:
  • Gunilla Heilborn (Sweden)
    “If you start with having a relationship with something dead, like a stone. Then you can move on to trees and flowers and some animals. And finally, you can try with people”
    • This is not a love story, by Gunilla Heilborn in collaboration with the performers Johan Thelander and Kristiina Viiala, premiered in Stockholm in May 2011. Since then it has been performed at various international festivals such as Tanz im August, Berlin, The Uovo festival, Milano, August Dance Festival, Tallin, De Internationale Kunze, Rotterdam, Göteborgs Dans och Teaterfestival and Ice Hot Helsinki. This coming autumn This is not a love story goes on tour to the UK for the first time and guest performances in Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany and France are on their way. Gunilla Heilborn shows her work all across Europe and more and more people become aware of the unique poetry and humour of her performances. 16 cities in 11 countries will be visited in 2013.
