International Festival of Rai Music
|Country and Region||Morocco — Oriental|
|Type of Festival||Music|
|Location of Festival||Oujda, Oriental, Morocco|
The International Festival of Raï Music began in 2006 in the city of Oujda, in the Oriental region of Morocco. The region is close to Algeria where rai music originated from. Raï’s origins of spontaneous lyrics accompanied by a flute began with the Bedouin shepherds with a blend of Spanish, French, African and Arabic music. Raï literally means opinion, whose modern translation means “Oh, yeah”. The migrations of peoples of the region have contributed to the rich traditional rhythms of the music. The 2008 edition featured Maghreb, Mediterranean and international artists such as Mohamed Rai, Rachid Beriah, Mory Kanté, Alpha Blondy and Booba and Reda Taliani.
|Festival Dates||July 22 - 23, 2010|
