Festival Description

The Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition is a competition for young performers of contemporary music open to all instrumentalists. More than 100 soloists and ensembles come from the all over the world to take part in this unique event in Amsterdam. In a period of one week, these musicians aim to convince the jury of their exceptional qualities. The jury this year is comprised of conductor Lucas Vis (chairman), the American guitarist Seth Josel, harpist Ernestine Stoop, pianist/organist Leo van Doeselaar and the Russian viola player Mikhail Bereznitsky.

Competition Program 2011:
  • The qualifying rounds take place at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Orgelpark; admission is free to the public. The final is on Sunday evening April 17th, 2011 in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ at 20.15. Fringe events 2011:
  • Within the framework of the competition fringe activities will be programmed. Jury member Leo van Doeselaar performs Dutch organ music of the 20th century on Monday, April 11th in the Orgelpark. Part of the program includes the impressive Sweelinck variations by Ton de Leeuw. On Wednesday, April 13th the duo Una Cintina (organ) and Christiaan Saris (percussion) perform a special program in the Orgelpark with compositions by Dutch composers and composers living in the Netherlands: Kate Moore, Jan Raas en Giuliano Bracci, among others. Moreover the first presentation of Notations21 will be staged, a splendid anthology of contemporary graphic scores, compiled by Theresa Sauer.

Applications 2011:
  • The international Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition takes place in Amsterdam from 10 – 17 April 2011.
  • The application deadline is December 1, 2010.
  • This is the competition for young performers of contemporary music and is open to all instrumental and vocal soloists, duos and ensembles up to twelve performers (excluding conductor). For ensembles the average age of the group members must not exceed 35 years. For vocalists the maximum age is 40.
  • At least two (2) compositions must be written by a Dutch composer or a composer who resides in the Netherlands and is integrated into Dutch musical life. All throughout the competition workshops, master-classes and concerts will be organized.
