World Festival of Sacred Music – Los Angeles
The World Festival of Sacred Music began an event in 1999 that was dedicated to celebrating the millennium throughout the world with hope and a commitment to peace and universal responsibility through music. The Foundation for World Arts in association with EarthWays Foundation, and UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance produced the 1999 Festival in response to a letter from the Dalai Lama encouraging involvement in the world event. The community responded resoundingly to the event which resulted in the organizers' initiative to carry out the Festival on a triennial basis.
To achieve the vision of the first edition, the festival has brought together tens of thousands of people of diverse ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, including artists of all genres, community and religious leaders, educators and students. The multidisciplinary events present the work of thousands of artists in diverse venues across Los Angeles. The fourth edition of the festival takes place in 2008 and will feature countless events over sixteen days. Past performers have included Throat singers of Tuva, Siberia to music from the Czech Republic, Korea, Thailand, Mexico, and the magnificent diversity of Los Angeles artists—the Festival provides opportunities for you to cross boundaries of religion, class, culture, race, and language, to share cultural traditions and to contemplate the spiritual, ethical and ecological questions of our times.
