The Mariposa Folk Festival is renowned for presenting an impressively wide range of folk and roots artists. The 9 stages arrayed around Orillia’s lakeside Tudhope Park site are guaranteed to serve up smile-making performances of many kinds – mostly musical, but also celebrating spoken word and dance. And while everyone looks forward to the spectacular main stage concerts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, it’s also a treat to enjoy the more intimate performances.
The Sunshine Stage, situated in the fabulous area for kids called Folkplay, hosts performances made especially for children and their parents. You are invited to stroll through the Artisans’ Village, a community of talented craftspersons with everything handmade for sale from guitars, fiddles and drums to jewellery, pottery, carvings, paintings, fashions and woven art. Over at our general store, called the Emporium, stylish Mariposa Folk Festival garb is available along with recordings by this year’s festival artists and hard-to-find, folk-music collectibles.
Food and beverage vendors at Mariposa are selected with care, with the result that the quality and variety of what’s on offer frequently earns praise from festival goers. Then there is the beer tent, a cordial place to meet and greet friends both new and old. Somehow, listening to good live music beneath the Mariposa beer tent canvas is a special festival experience quite unlike any other.
