Festival Description

The International Organ Summer in Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík, will be held for the 18th time this year. The festival has firmly established itself over the years as one of Reykjavík’s regular music events, since the inauguration of the great Klais organ in 1992. It has earned worldwide recognition and the reputation of Hallgrímskirkja’s organ has drawn many of the world’s greatest organists to play, such as Olivier Latry, Susan Landale, Daniel Roth, Nicolas Kynaston, and Thomas Trotter, to name only a few.

This year, a selection of outstanding performers will participate in the festival, including Dame Gillian Weir (UK), Winfried Bönig (Cologne Cathedral, Germany), Christian Præstholm (Denmark) and Halgeir Schiager (Norway). Furthermore, we are pleased to introduce Icelandic organists that will be prominent in this year’s festival: Hörður Áskelsson, Kári Þormar, Guðný Einarsdóttir, and Steingrímur Þórhallsson.

This summer we are proud to pronounce that the International Organ Summer will host 35 concerts. Every Saturday from June 5th until August 14th, a lunchtime organ concert will be held at 12:00.

There will be an organ concert every Sunday at 17:00 from June 27th until August 15th. There will also be an opportunity to hear the concert organists play a postludium in the Sunday services at 11:00.

The Society of Icelandic Organists will be hosting concerts at 12:00 on Thursdays from July 1st until August 12th in collaboration with the International Organ Summer.

Finally, lunchtime concerts, performed by Hallgrímskirkja’s celebrated chamber choir Schola Cantorum Reykjavicencis, will be held on Wednesdays at 12:00 in July and August.
