Festival Description

The annual San Francisco Theater Festival offers a unique smorgasbord of 70 Theater groups. Shakespeare, hip-hop, improv, folk tales, solo performers, musical, magic, comedy, drama, and a full children’s program happening on ten stages located in downtown San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Gardens, Center for the Arts, Zeum and Metreon.

Bay Area theater companies such as A.C.T., 42nd Street Moon, Magic Theater, Lorraine Hansberry, Traveling Jewish Theatre, BATS Improv, and many many others are expected to participate in the Fourth Annual San Francisco Theater Festival. Surprise visiting performers are also part of the festivities. Many of the performances are family friendly including 12 shows especially for children. Last year’s festival attracted more than 6,500 people.

The festival is a celebration of local theater—consisting of short performances, scenes, one-acts, excerpts, and solo performances at three indoor and seven outdoor venues. “This is the only theater festival that showcases a huge variety of live theater in one place on one day. It’s truly a people’s festival. It’s casual, fun, exciting, and it makes theater accessible to everyone,” said producer Bill Schwartz. “In centuries past, theater was a people’s art form and that is exactly what this festival is about. We are returning theater to its roots.” And It’s FREE!
