Festival Description

Loosely based on the Doppelganger concept, the programming for the 2010 AmBul Festival brings together performers and composers working in different locations, contexts, and even time periods, but who share important — and sometimes surprising — common features.

This series of international “twins” includes——
Plucked Pair: American banjo player Paul Elwood joins forces with Bulgarian tamboura player Valeri Dimchev for several world premieres

The Two Schuman(n)s: A program of music by Robert Schumann and the American composer William Schuman in honor of their 2/1 anniversary year in 2010

Samuel Barber and Andrey Stoyanov Rediscovered: Previously unknown works by Barber and Stoyanov, including the European premierе of unpublished Barber songs with American soprano Susan Brownfield

Etude-Fantasy: Classic Chopin meets Denev Jazz: Bulgarian composer and jazz pianist Lubo Denev improvises on themes by Frederick Chopin

Balkan Drum Dialogues: Two young percussion ensembles, Splash from Timisoara, Romania, and Accent from Pleven, join forces for the festival finale at Studio I of Bulgarian National Radio, featuring the premieres of works by Denev and Roumen Balyozov. This year’s AmBul Festival finale at BNR also brings together an elite group of seasoned improvisers to honor the memory of two distinguished Bulgarian musicians, Yulia Tsenova and Roumen Toskov, both of whom participated in last year’s festival.

Festival Story:

AmBul Festival began in 1998 as American Music Week in Bulgaria, a contemporary music festival bringing American composers and performers to Sofia for annual collaborations with colleagues from Bulgaria and other European countries. During its six-year run, AMW in BG presented the European and world premieres of more than 150 new works. In 2007 the festival made a successful comeback as AmBul Weekend, teaming up with the US Embassy and the Boris Christoff Music Center in Sofia to host the event under the honorary patronage of former US Ambassador to Bulgaria, John R. Beyrle. The eighth edition of the festival, AmBul8, featured eight concerts at the Christoff Music Center in October 2008. Beyrle’s successor as US Ambassador to Bulgaria, Nancy McEldowney, was the honorary patron.
