Festival Description

This week-long festival, held annually in Jarosław, an historic town in the Southeastern outskirts of Poland, was founded in 1993. Visiting musicians present their concert-program and also participate in a debate on approaches to early music, tradition, performance practice and its contextual relationships between oral and scriptural. These musicians hold seminars and participate in meetings, discussing and presenting their ideas, views on music and philosophy.

The Town’s churches host the concerts and artists are lodged in an old Benedictines’ abbey where the artists are welcomed to stay behond the period of their participation in the festival. Workshop participants perform alongside renown artists and much attention is given to presenting different traditions of liturgical chant (i.e. Byzantine, Old-Roman, Gregorian, Georgian, Dominican, Benedictine) as well as creating a venue for the meeting of traditional/folk singers with an academic approach. Each day of the festival is filled with a sequence of events: morning Gregorian matins, seminars “Song of Our Roots”, workshops, rehearsals, Gregorian vespers, concerts, dance-nights accompanied by folk bands.
