Festival Description

The Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition and Killruddery House and Gardens present the Summer Festival of Opera line-up featuring Ireland’s top opera singing talents which runs for two Sundays in July at the magnificent 17th Century Killruddery House, Bray Co Wicklow. The event brings the country’s established Irish opera singers and also gives younger up-and-coming singers a platform on which to show their talents in the beautiful surroundings of the Elizabethan Killruddery House and Gardens.

Since 2005, Ireland’s Grand Dame of opera, Veronica Dunne, has hosted these wonderful operatic garden parties at the magnificent 17th Century Killruddery House. Now in it’s sixth year of showcasing the best of Irish operatic singing talents. With magnificent voices and stunning music in the unique and breathtaking surroundings of Co. Wicklow from the Orangery at Killruddery House, guarantee both these Sunday afternoons of opera a ‘must-see’ event on the opera music diary.

Veronica Dunne was an inspiration to all singers said President Mary McAleese on her 80th birthday: In 1992, the Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition was the realization of a dream from this very dedicated and talented woman affectionately known as Ronnie to one and all in the music world of Dublin. Ronnie received a 20,000 pound bursary and made her dream come true by investing this bursary into helping new and up-coming singers voices from around the globe by setting up her singing competition, which is now recognized worldwide.

The competition gaining worldwide acclaim amongst budding singing stars continued every two years at first and now is a triennial event attracting competitors from all over the world. Each year the tough job to find the next international opera singing star is made up of an elite panel of expert judges which includes: Chairperson Jane Carty; Dieter Kaegi (Artistic Director, Opera Ireland), Isabella Gabor (Director, Kammer Oper, Vienna), Sergei Leiferkus (Baritone), Ileana Cotrubas (Soprano), Christian Carlstedt (Casting Director, Bavarian State Opera, Munich), conductor Laurent Wagner and Glyndebourne’s Director of Artistic Administration, Steven Naylor.
