Festival Description

International Opera Festival Miskolc has taken place in June since 2001. Each year the title reflects the thematic focus of the festival — ”Bartók & …”. The operas are performed in their original language — this time in Italian, German, Russian, Latin, and Hungarian, and featuring the Bartók opera, with English subtitles, the other performances will have Hungarian subtitles. The program includes a variety of nations, operas, the many different musical performances, tasty Hungarian foods and wines, and the astonishingly beautiful Miskolc women make the town a pleasant place to stay.

Festival Story:

The idea was to create an annual International Opera Festival for the Eastern European public with a focus on Béla Bartók and another internationally acknowledged composer, later it broadened to include distinct styles. The main aim of the festival is to encourage cultural co-operation between Hungarian artists and artists within the European Union, especially in the contemporary and classical music performance (opera and ballet), focusing on Béla Bartók, one of the most original figures in 20th century music. Another aim was to become a “Gateway to the East” by offering a geographically convenient and constant venue for the best opera performances in Central-Eastern Europe every year, in particular by performing and promoting the full scale of Bartók’s music written for the stage. The Festival enjoys the support of City of Miskolc, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the National Cultural Fund of Hungary and several sponsors from the corporate sector.
