Edinburgh International Festival

No surprise: Edinburgh International Festival once again offers up the best art being made today.
There are so many highlights from the thousands of this year’s offerings. Two of Ireland’s best known theatre companies, Pan Pan and The Gate, devote nine days to performances about Samuel Beckett; and The Mechanics of Man explores Leonardo da Vinci’s extraordinary work in anatomy with an exhibition of his drawings and notes cataloguing some twenty human dissections.
Patti Smith and Phillip Glass perform an homage to beat poet Allen Ginsburg with words and music. The Wooster Group performs the UK premiere of their version of Hamlet, remixing film footage of Gielgud’s production with Richard Burton with live performance by Wooster actors.
Scottish theatre company Grid Iron presents a site-specific work in Europe’s largest indoor climbing arena. MIT Media Lab’s Todd Machover invites audiences to get in on the action by contributing sounds that are then used to create an EIF-commissioned symphonic work called Festival City.
One thing will never happen at Edinburgh: boredom! Go see why the arts world descends on Edinburgh.
