Roskilde Festival

Monday, June 24th, 2013

RoskildeSome of the best festivals in the world are not content with providing entertainment, they build community. Roskilde Festival in Denmark harnesses the help of 32,000 volunteers to keep things running and donates all profits to humanitarian and cultural causes.

And then there is the line-up. Kraftwerk brings their extraordinary 3D show straight from London’s Tate Modern. Rihanna takes over the Orange Stage with her R&B charisma. Sigur Rós sails in from Iceland with the sounds of Kveikur, their latest album. And Animal Collective’s playful synth takes pop in a whole new direction.

Ready for a change of pace? Then help Umschichten build a church out of beer cans - or build up your tagging skills instead at the Graffiti workshop.

The festival invokes the words of Kurt Vonnegut, who said “History is merely a list of surprises. It can only prepare us to be surprised yet again”. Prepare to be surprised.

Isle of Wight Festival

Monday, June 10th, 2013

Jessie Price

As the summer festival season kicks into high gear, the Isle is the destination this week.
UK’s Isle of Wight Festival returns in 2013 with a strong and eclectic music line-up.
Fresh from headlining at Coachella, UK rock band The Stone Roses are ready to play on their home turf. Paul Weller, the “modfather” frontman of The Jam and The Style Council will perform on the Main Stage, along with Boomtown Rats and Bon Jovi.
If you need to recover from all this great music, consider a new addition in 2013 — Bathing Under the Sky. Relax in a beautiful wood-fired hot tub with a glass of sparkling wine.
Go lose yourself in Bohemian Woods, an idyllic landscape with hammocks where you can relax while listening to music ranging from gypsy to afrobeat and acid jazz.
No one will want to get kicked off this Isle.
