The Decidedly Non-Nostalgic Playlist

Vivian GirlsRetro nostalgia can be a lot of fun — but if it’s not counterbalanced by newer, fresher voices, one runs the risk of living in a mythical past. The 2009 Pitchfork festival showcases some of the most interesting new performers to show up in recent years, along with established acts like Yo La Tengo. And it’s not like the newcomers don’t know their musical history, either: pay close attention, and you’ll hear ideas drawn from folk, bubblegum, punk, and prog rock — but thoroughly rethought and recast for today. If you get over to Chicago for the festival, here are some of the bands to check out — and if you’re stuck at home, you can still pretend you’re there, and make yourself a Chicago hot dog while you listen to the music:

Bowerbirds — Northern Lights
Cymbals Eat Guitars — Some Trees
Fucked Up — Magic Word
Grizzly Bear — While You Wait For The Others
Japandroids — Young Hearts Spark Fire
M83 — Graveyard Girl
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart — Young Adult Friction
The Very Best — Kamphopo
The Walkmen — Red Moon
Wavves — So Bored
