Tahlequah, the City of Firsts presents the Annual Arts on the Avenue each June. The event is free, open to the public, and will take place in historic downtown Tahlequah on Cherokee Capitol Square. The downtown event will feature a variety of art on display surrounding historic Cherokee Capitol Square including jewelry, paintings, pottery, woodcarvings and sculptures, beadwork, baskets, and photography by Native and non-Native American artists from around the region. Throughout the event, some artists will be demonstrating the creative process of their specific artistic medium. In addition to visual art, there will be a mixture of performing artists as well. Enjoy live music such as Jazz, Folk, Blues, Country and Classic Rock. A variety of dance performances will be on tap throughout the event.
Several area youth also get a chance to share their aspiring art. Area youth will be presenting art for sale, as well as offering caricatures and face painting. You may just catch a glance of these young artists dipping their brushes in paint and making the canvases come alive.
In addition, Oklahoma wineries will be showcased in a wine garden along Keetoowah Street so guests may enjoy the art while sampling the multiple flavors of wines produced here in the region. The wineries and local downtown merchants will also be participating in, Wines on the Avenue, to be held Friday night from 5:30pm-8:30pm along Muskogee Avenue.
Arts on the Avenue is sponsored by Cherokee Nation Tourism, Northeastern State University, Tahlequah Main Street Association, Tahlequah Chamber of Commerce and United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma.
