Festival Description

CultureMart Festival features the work of resident artists annually. A range of genres within artistic expression are included — theatre, dance, music, new media, poetry, puppetry, and visual arts. The festival serves to promote and encourage their artistic visions. The performance workshops feature works-in-progress where you can see first hand the development of a piece, offer feedback, and be a part of the process.

Programming Week 1 — 2013:
  • CHANG(E)
    January 28 & 29, at 7:00pm
    • Followed by a conversation on hybrid performance Chang(e) is based on the life and work of Philadelphia-based Asian American performance artist and activist Kathy Change. This politically driven dance theatre piece peers into the life of a woman whose mission was to save the world.
      On a shared bill with GENET PORNO (see below)
  • YVAN GREENBERG/LABORATORY THEATER
    GENET PORNO
    January 28 & 29, at 7:00pm
    • Followed by a conversation on hybrid performance GENET PORNO is based on Jean Genet’s 1943 novel, “Our Lady of the Flowers,” and follows the loves and betrayals of a transvestite prostitute named Divine. Divine’s story is staged within the production of a present-day gay porn video, incorporating narrative elements from the confessional videoblog of a real-life porn star. On a shared bill with Chang(e) (see above)
  • LEYNA MARIKA PAPACH
    GLASS MOUTH
    January 28 & 29, at 8:30pm
    • Followed by a conversation on hybrid performance Glass Mouth is inspired by the idea that words have a spirit to them after they are spoken out loud, changing the possibility and outcome of future events.
      On a shared bill with SPHINX (see below)
  • YOAV GAL
    SPHINX
    January 28 & 29, at 8:30pm
    • Followed by a conversation on hybrid performance SPHINX, a small feminine creature, is facing a mighty hero who fails to solve her riddle. She seduces, suffocates, and then devours the hero’s remains in a new opera, which threatens to explode the genre.
      On a shared bill with Glass Mouth.

  • REBECCA DAVIS
    RESTLESS NEST
    January 31 & February 01, at 7:00pm
    • Restless Nest and its five performers molt and mutate. Masses of used twist-ties, cardboard, and old clothes collected over one year are reassembled into new forms that generate the sound, light, and choreography.
  • SHAUN IRONS + LAUREN PETTY
    KEEP YOUR ELECTRIC EYE ON ME
    January 31 & February 01, at 8:30pm
    • Part video installation, interactive media lab and live performance, Keep Your Electric Eye On Me conjures notions of transformation, dual realities, hysteria, and the desire for the unattainable.
  • JEFF MOUSSEAU + BARBARA WIECHMANN + LISA DOVE
    THE SNOW QUEEN
    February 02, at 7:00pm; and February 03, at 2:00pm
    • An innovative re-telling for adults and older kids of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story. This episodic tale of a girl who travels barefoot through the world in search of her childhood friend, abducted by the Snow Queen, is structured as seven self-contained stories within a larger story; a staged cycle of songs and striking visuals.
