Festival Description

2013 has been suspended due to a shortfall of funds. Please keep checking back for updates. The Portland Performing Arts Festival is a new summer festival presenting nationally-renowned performances in music, dance and theater. Join us in June for a range of performances presented at venues all over Portland’s Arts District. Featuring music, dance, theater, and performance art, the Festival will transform Portland’s Arts District into a hotbed of creative activity for four days. Beginning with a guitar master class on and ending with performances of theater and classical music on Sunday, the event will feature eight Festival performances and dozens of associated Fringe programs.

The Portland Performing Arts Festival is working with arts organizations, individual performers, and artists from around Maine to create a vibrant set of Fringe performances spanning Portland’s Peninsula. The Fringe Festival will fill Portland during the Festival period presenting everything from pop-up concerts to public art exhibits to film and food events. The Festival, by extending its marketing and promotion over these events, hopes to support Maine artists and arts & cultural organizations by developing audiences for their performances. Owned and operated independently of the Festival, the Fringe performances ticket revenue accrues directly to the presenting organization or artist.

Festival Dates June 26 - 30, 2013 suspended

  • Paul Sullivan

Venue — Armory Room, Masonic Temple

    • The legendary composer and performer presents world premiere. Internationally accomplished composer and pianist Paul Sullivan will perform the world premiere of music commissioned by the Portland Festival, as well as works from his jazz repertory. How did this happen? We asked him what, if he could choose anything at all, he would want to perform. The answer came back right away — a series of works inspired by visual art. One of Maine’s most distinguished artists, Paul Sullivan has enjoyed a richly varied and distinguished career as a composer and a pianist. As a soloist, with his trio, and as a member of the Paul Winter Consort, he has played concert tours in most of the United States and Europe, as well as Croatia, Israel, Costa Rica, and Japan. As a jazz player he has worked in some of New York’s most prestigious clubs, including Sweet Basil, The Village Vanguard, and Bradley’s. His music has been broadcast internationally, as well as on all the major American networks, including National Public Radio. He received a Grammy Award for his work on the Paul Winter Consort CD,Silver Solstice. He has also worked extensively in the dance world, playing piano for Merce Cunningham’s classes, and writing music for the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. He has also enjoyed a long friendship with the Pilobolus Dance Theater, for whom he has written over 15 scores. And, closest to our hearts, he wrote the score for last year’s Festival highlight, Alison Chase/Performance’s world premiere dance work “Handsomest.”
