Engage Arts Festival Bandon features contemporary music, visual arts and literature in the annual ENGAGE Arts Festival which takes place each September across multiple venues in Bandon, Co. Cork. Featuring over 30 events across 15 venues, highlights of the 4-day programme in Bandon’s historic town (often called the ‘Gateway to West Cork’).
Culture Night is celebrated on Friday and offers a diverse selection of artistic entertainment until long after dark. Another anticipated element of the Festival is The Green Village at the colourful Green Village, with yurts and tents beside the river, will offer a series of talks, workshops and exhibitions on the theme of sustainable living where all of the family can be entertained and educated.
Festival Director, Eugene O’Hea said “This festival is a celebration of musicians, poets, writers, actors and painters. Its ethos is to showcase both established and emerging artists with an emphasis on promoting up and coming artists of every discipline.”
With over 80% of events free of charge, an emphasis on showcasing the best of Irish contemporary talent, and in a beautiful County Cork location, ENGAGE is rapidly becoming a Festival to be included on the annual ‘Must-catch’ calendar.

- Celebrating its 5th birthday in 2012, highlights of this year’s packed four-day Festival programme include a reading from Rooney prize-winning novelist and short-story writer Kevin Barry, while Cork native Leanne O’Sullivan and British National Poem Winner James Harpur both present their evocative poetry. An eclectic musical strand features Associate Professor of Music at the University of California, Nina Treadwell, who performs on a variety of stringed instruments including theorbo, baroque guitar, and Renaissance lute. Jazz innovators, The Greg Felton Trio, experimental cellist Ilse de Ziah, and master musicians The Concorde Ensemble also feature. Dancers Nick Bryson and Damian Punch are trapped in the bodies of peacemaking Northern Ireland politicians in Hanging in There, while Jack Healy of Cork-based production company Theatre Makers takes to the stage in a one-man performance of Kavanagh’s The Great Hunger. Visual artists exhibiting at the 2012 Festival include AIB Art Prize recipient Linda Quinlan, landscape painter Bridget Flannery, and the avant-garde poster artist, Stephen Brandes. ENGAGE is also pleased to announce an inaugural One Stage Design Competition. Practicing architects, third level students of architecture, fine art and design, and artists working in any medium, are invited to submit designs on contemporary pieces of street furniture for the town of Bandon. The closing date for entries is September 17th, 2012. The Design Competition is organised by ENGAGE Arts Festival with the support of Cork County Council and Bandon Town Council and with funding support from The Arts Council of Ireland.
