Semmy’s Rock Festival is a one day festival whose aim is to benefit and bring attention to Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) a rare and deadly form of pediatric brain cancer. The benefit seeks to support research at the Semmy Foundation (Stichting Semmy). Foundation Semmy seeks to extend the life expectancy and eventually to increasing the survival chances of children with this form of brain cancer.
The festival was initiated by Sacha van der Donk whose child was diagnosed with this rare form of cancer. The presentation of the festival is in hands of Aukje and Marieke van Ginneken. In the Netherlands approximately 125 children are diagnosed annually to with a brain tumor, whereas 12-18 children are diagnosed with DIPG annually. Due to the rarity of the disease the pharmaceutical industry, KWF and KIKA have not been interested in the research because the rarity is not a financially motivating factor. The life expectancy of the disease is nearly 0% percent. Whereas other forms of pediatric cancers have survival rates that have increased to more than 70%. To enourmous sorrow, one of the organizers of Semmy’s Rock lost their daughter Rosanne to the disease at the end of 2010. VU medical centre in Amsterdam has started a study into ponsgliomen with financial support of Semmy Foundation. This research costs a tremendous amount of money. Please join us at Semmy’s Rock Festival and help us support the worthwhile cause.
The participating artist are from The Netherlands and from the international arena. The festival takes place in Den Boogaard at Moergestel.
