Festival Description | The rich history of the The Central City Opera House began in 1877 when the locals organized a fund drive for construction of the opera house. The gold mining town’s wealthy inhabitants mixed with the Welsh and Cornish miners brought their money, skills and traditions together in the project. The music from the inhabitant’s homelands brought a rich tradition to the locale and hence to the opera house. Townspeople took part in the construction along with some of the best building professionals in the area. The Opera house was built in 1878 and became a National Historic Landmark as a centerpiece of the historic gold mining town of Central City. The early festival program featured both opera and theater. Since that time the program has included more progressive works. Just a few individuals who have graced the stage include Lillian Gish, Beverly Sills, Jerome Hines, Helen Hayes, Samuel Ramey, and Catherine Malfitano. Since that time the program has included more progressive works including regional, North American and world premieres. An all-new Fringe Festival was added in 2011, featuring Short Works, jazz, a history weekend and more. |
