Almagro International Classical Theatre Festival
Director: Natalia Menéndez
The Almagro International Classical Theatre Festival is a unique cultural experience related to Baroque and Spanish Golden Age legacy, transferred to the contemporary national and international scene. The Festival is an annual cultural event held in Almagro, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, during July.
Year by year, we have held 34 editions and now we are preparing our 35th, and the Festival has become a cultural event which joins thousands of people from all over the world to attend plays created and performed by national and international companies. During the Festival, people can also enjoy exhibitions, workshops and contests held in places full of history and beauty, such as theatres, churches, patios, museums, squares and hermitages.
Almagro is a town of about 8.000 inhabitants and a well-known Historic-Artistic site. In 1954 the open air auditorium, the Corral de Comedias (http://flic.kr/p/9kt2Gy), an emblematic Baroque building where plays were held during XV and XVII centuries, was rediscovered and it is nowadays the best preserved theatre from the Spanish Golden Age. Together with it, the main square, built in the Middle Ages, an emblematic place and the heart of the town, is one of the sixteen spaces where the Festival takes place. Every summer, Almagro becomes an exceptional area for the development of best international theatre in Spain.
