Festival Description

The Summer Play Festival is produced by The Living Room for Artists during July each year. Although in 2010 the festival will not take place due to major construction on the building. The festival presents original new plays and musicals by emerging writers. Since its beginnings in 2004, the festival has presented 450 performances by more than 100 writers, directors, designers and producers. The opportunity given to these creative individuals allows them a venue to further their craft. The up-and-coming artists are guided by established professionals in the field and are given full financial support. SPF accepts unsolicited manuscripts from writers that have no agents to represent them, making SPF one of the premiere developmental theatre festivals in the US. In additon, the Festival does not charge entrance fees to the participants and does not take control of the rights of the works for future productions.

Festival Story:

Since 2005 The Living Room for Artists has been a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, as a part of The Living Room for Artists, Inc., to ensure that the Summer Play Festival (since 2004) perpetuates its mission whose aim is to support emerging theatre artists and encourage them to create and work in theatre. While the principal activity of the organizaton is the Summer Play Festival—the organization produces other programs to ensure its mission. These include—”Careers in Theatre”, a series of panel discussions that take place throughout the year; “Theatre and Broadcasting”; an internship program during the festival for university students from across the country; the “Donmar Warehouse Residency Program” providing opportunities for Festival’s writers to spend three weeks in a residence in London; and a forum moderated by theatre critics from Time Out New York—to discuss today’s theatre within the “Salon series”.
