Orchestral music download service:
  • Boston Symphony Launches new music download service at bso.org and announces the release date for first major recordings by James Levine and BSO.
    • The Boston Symphony Orchestra, through its highly successful website bso.org, will launch the first orchestral music download service with tracks available in both standard MP3 and HD Surround formats on December 1, 2008. This addition to bso.org anticipates the release of the first major recordings by James Levine and the BSO—four new releases, including Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe, to be available in late February 2009. All four of the new BSO releases (full details concerning the three additional releases will be announced at a later date), under the auspices of BSO Classics, are drawn from recordings that took place during live performances by James Levine and the orchestra at Symphony Hall, part of an ongoing project to record all of Mr. Levine’s BSO concerts for both possible recording consideration and archival purposes. The new bso.org download service will offer a selection of historic BSO, Pops, Chamber Players, and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra recordings. Boston Pops selections to be featured include Oscar and Tony, with Keith Lockhart conducting award-winning music from Broadway and Hollywood; Sleigh Ride, featuring holiday classics, along with the Pops signature holiday piece, Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” written specifically for the orchestra; and tracks from America, a collection of beloved patriotic favorites… and much more.
