Festival Description

Three days of the best experimental and underground music you’re likely to experience this year. Come and be illuminated and inspired. Where else would you hear: the greatest live noise band on the planet playing with a legendary free jazz bassist, the best skiffle and kazoo jug band you’ve never heard of, someone shaking The Arches and picking up the building’s harmonics with seismographs, the microscopic sounds of acid burning nylon?

Festival Story:

INSTAL is one of the leading festivals of experimental and underground music and performance in Europe, attracting a local, national and international audience of artists, critics and curators. It is a festival both for those familiar and new to experimental music, challenging musicians to take risks, and asking audiences to enjoy those risks.

The festival programme boasts a cast of pioneering, provocative musicians, artists, writers, poets and bon viveurs who exist outside the mainstream, between borders and definitions presenting a clutch of unique special events at The Arches in Glasgow. We have hooked up with nearly fifty of the most original, essential and legendary musicians (folk, free jazz, noise or improvisation) of the last 50 years, as well as visual artists, conceptual poets and radical thinkers and asked them what it is that really inspires them, what’s right at the core of what they do? In collaboration with the artists Arika have turned those ideas, those key impulses to create into one-off happenings, readings, performances, talks and a couple of guerrilla distractions about town.

Arika’s Creative Producer Barry Esson says of INSTAL “We want to try and create situations in which audiences and artists can interact and have fun, to offer situations where people can experience a broad range of experimental music.in an atmosphere which is really the most suitable for people to dig the music that is being presented. INSTAL should be an exciting, relaxed, informal and not pretentious space in which we can put on some really hard ass music, but in a way that everybody can enjoy”

So if you think it might be interesting to find out what it sounds like to press white hot metal into dry ice, to treat punctuation as percussion, to see some of the most exhilarating live performers in music knackered and on their knees after a 3-hour high-energy-marathon or to discover the best skiffle and kazoo jug band you’ve never heard of then INSTAL’s for you.
