Festival Description

The Nandikar National Theatre Festival celebrates the dramatic arts, offering theatre lovers of the city a chance to experience 10 days of intelligent, thought-provoking entertainment. Featuring plays for children and adults in several Indian languages like Bengali, Hindi, Kannad and Marathi, as well as in English, it promises to be a virtual melting-pot of contemporary theatre traditions and cultures, bringing together troupes from all over the country and even beyond.

The festival began in 1984, and has since made its niche in the theatre calendar of the country. Each year the festival takes place from December 16th to the 25th. Repertory companies from several parts of the country and abroad add to the festival’s attraction. Calcutta hails as the cultural capital of the country, and this festival proves how very true the city is to its reputation. Theatre groups never tire of reiterating how much they enjoy performing in the city and it is not difficult to see why. It all takes place at the Academy of Fine Arts in Calcutta.
