Festival Description

The festival includes the popular Americana Weekend and will see some of the United States’ brightest stars crossing the Atlantic and heading down to Gateshead for a whole weekend of American music. From new country, alternative country, folk-country and country-rock to bluegrass, soul, Americana, blues, rockabilly and honky-tonk, the festival will cover every shade of the American roots music spectrum and beyond.

Previous festival performers have included the legendary country-blues act Tony Joe White, a solo show from Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter and film composer Randy Newman, talented Texan-born singer songwriter Guy Clark whose songs have been hits for everyone from Johnny Cash to Lyle Lovett, a rare UK visit from country rocker Dwight Yoakam and “the most accomplished new American female singer-songwriter to emerge in a decade.” (UNCUT) Tift Merritt.

Evening performances from some of America’s finest there will be a programme of free events all day Saturday and Sunday with an outdoor stage on Performance Square (right next to The Sage Gateshead on the Baltic side) featuring some of the best international country, Americana, rockabilly, bluegrass and honky-tonk artists around, presented by Jumpin’ Hot Club.

There’ll be more free festival entertainment from noon until sundown on Saturday and Sunday when Northern Rock Foundation Hall is transformed into the Americana Lounge. Workshops, performances and open mic sessions; and Americana film screenings.
