Festival Description

Malta Festival Poznań, to be held in Poland, is one of the most important performing arts festival in Central and Eastern Europe. Each year, the festival gathers more than 50.000 visitors, invites about 500 artist and shows on average 120 events which take place all over the city of Poznań. The festival took its name form the artificial lake (Malta) created in 1950s within the city of Poznań. In 2011, on the 20th anniversary of the festival’s existence, the structure of its programme was given a new shape. Malta entered into the third decade with a new name too - Malta Festival Poznań. A central theme of every edition - Idiom - emerged from the interdisciplinary programme. It deals with contemporary issues of social and cultural life. Idioms are an experimental project which takes into consideration Malta’s tradition and specific character. In 2013 it is called oh man, oh machine / człowiek-maszyna and curated by Romeo Castellucci. The program presents the achievements of the most interesting international artists and supports new Polish talents.

    • KRAFTWERK is a legend of electronica and one of the most important bands ever — will play a 3D concert in the Old Gasworks. Before that Malta Festival Poznań will present one of the few bands who have made a revolutionary change in modern music KRAFTWERK. From 2005, when they were invited to the Venice Biennale, they have realised several of their projects in the context of visual arts. The crowning success in this matter was last year’s retrospective of their work at the MoMA in New York, featuring eight 3D concerts presenting the audio and video material from the group’s eight studio albums. In February 2013, the project was presented at Tate Modern in London. The concert at Malta Festival Poznań, which will take place in the Old Gasworks, will be an open-air, full-length event, lasting about 2 hours, adaptation of these shows.

    • Thom Yorke will visit Poznań for the second time, again at the invitation of Malta Festival Poznań. He was here four years ago with Radiohead. Now, together with friends of his new band, he will perform at the first European tour promoting the debut record of ATOMS FOR PEACE – Amok. The line-up of ATOMS FOR PEACE consists of Yorke and Flea, as well as Radiohead’s long-term producer, Nigel Godrich (keyboard and synthesisers), drummer Joey Waronker known for his collaboration with among others Beck and R.E.M., and Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Mauro Refosco (percussion) who played with David Byrne and Brian Eno. The musicians met at the end of 2009 – at the request of Yorke, who wanted to present songs from his solo album The Eraser live. Already during the first performance, the band played Judge, Jury, and Executioner, called by Yorke the first joint song of ATOMS FOR PEACE. In September 2011, news was released on the record being a work in progress, and a year later the ‘Atoms’ released the Default single on iTunes.>
Visual arts show 2013:
  • The Four Seasons Restaurant, directed by Romeo Castellucci
    • The Four Seasons Restaurant is a hypnotic journey through the history of images, a story of intransigence and risk related to every creative act. The show was inspired by a series of abstract works by Mark Rothko under the same title. The painter created it in 1958, having received a commission from the Seagram Building in New York. He resigned and returned the advance payment when it transpired that his works were to decorate an exclusive restaurant in the building. In the show Romeo Castellucci joins in the discussion on the theme of world’s superficiality, the world where a human being is incessantly confronted with pictures, often empty and persuasive, serving the purpose of entertainment rather than cognition. Dates: June 24, 25, and 26, 2013
