Festival Description

The port city of Hakodate’s international festival supplies a long-awaited venue for international folklore and world music and dance groups to gather in Japan. Performers from all over the world meet together and exchange world culture with each other and with festival-goers through a series of events over the course of a week. The Festival is centered on an outdoor concert stage with a spectacular outlook on the famous night view in front of Hakodate Mountain, and also incorporates numerous smaller-scale performances and workshops at “Fringe” events around the town. The WMDF committee organizes the event under the theme of “Long Now, Big Here”, with the support and assistance of many volunteers, and especially the work of the traveling band “Hinokiya”.

WMDF is organised by the Committee of the World Music and Dance Festival, which is an activity of the non-profit World Music and Dance Festival General Incorporated Association (WMDF GIA). Production is by Hitococochi Inc.
