Festival Description | The annual Duruthu Perahera, first held in 1927, celebrates the Buddha’s visit to Sri Lanka with a huge procession and festival. The parade winds through the streets of Colombo on a route towards the sacred temple Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara. The festival was first held in 1927 and continues to be one of the region’s most popular pageants and religious festivals. Events center on three perahera (processions) featuring costumed actors, dancers, musicians, and devotees dressed in white, accompanied by elephants. |
