Festival Description | We are a festival in the traditions of the Welsh Eisteddfod but are international. We began in 1947 as the idea of one man who thought that bringing the world together under the flag of music bright help to go some way to help soothe the ravages left by the Second World War. We are still going strong and still achieving that original aim, although the festival has grown and developed. 40,000 visitors come to Llangollen for a week in July, 5,000 of whom are competitors to compete in Choral Music Competitions, Folk Music Competitions, Folk Dance Competitions, Barbershop Competitions and to generally meet people from such countries as Nepal, Ghana, Iceland, Chechnya, USA, Philippines – just some of the entries for this year’s Eisteddfod. Our evening concerts feature world-renowned artists such as José Carreras, Shirley Bassey, Bryn Terfel, Elaine Paige, Catherine Jenkins, Michael Ball and – Luciano Pavarotti who returned to Llangollen in 1995 to say ‘thank you’ to the festival where, with his town choir, he won first prize in the Male Voice Competition in 1955 and that experience he told everyone he could, changed his life. Llangollen is a beautiful small town in North Wales, surrounded by the Berwyn Hills, with the River Dee running through it. Popular with canoeists (World Championships have been held here), it is known as a friendly, welcoming and international town, where people from all nations come once a year to meet in friendship. |
