Highlighted performances 2013:
- Meklit Hadero
- We mentioned Meklit Hadero to you last week, she’s been in London this week rehearsing with the UK band, and is sounding amazing - her performance blew the audience of Woman’s Hour away yesterday. Having played a storming show at the Vortex last night, Meklit performs at the Southbank Centre’s Women of the World festival this evening (Friday) and also at Dahlak in Stockwell on Sunday 10 March.
- Woodkid
- is the stage persona of Yoann Lemoine, the Grammy-nominated French video director. Woodkid returns to the UK to celebrate the release of his first album The Golden Age (out March 18 on Island); he plays the Norwich & Norfolk Festival (Monday 13 May), London’s Roundhouse (Tuesday 14 May), and Dublin’s Forbidden Fruit festival on Sunday 2 June.
- Kronos Quartet at the Barbican
- A few months ago, we told you about the première of the new collaboration between Kronos Quartet and Laurie Anderson on Friday 28 June. There are just a few tickets left, and you can buy them here. Two more Barbican concerts have just been announced - on Wednesday 18 September they are joined by demon accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen for the first British performance of their Uniko collaboration, and on Tuesday 13 May next year they play with Bryce Dessner from The National, and première a new Philip Glass string quartet.
Artist feature 2013:
- The Soul Rebels
Performances — Manchester RNCM on Friday, May 10
London Village Underground Saturday, May 11 and
Norwich Theatre Royal Sunday, May 12
- If jazz music is the heart of New Orleans, then The Soul Rebels’ music is the blood that pumps through the city’s veins. The Soul Rebels embrace the rich jazz traditions of their homeland but add life-affirming vocals and hip-shaking grooves aplenty. Couple those elements to funk, ska and hip hop, add harmony vocals and more catchy horn lines and solos than you can shake a stick at, and you have a good time party band like no other - with an infections energy that’s impossible to resist. Watch their reworking of Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams here.
“The most adventurous of all the New Orleans brass bands…The Soul Rebels are the missing link between Louis Armstrong and Public Enemy.” Village Voice
