Festival Story:

The first of the “Festival of the Black Sea Countries” was held in May 2000 and it was initially attended by 6 countries (Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Romania, and Ukraine) however, in time the number of participant countries has increased and reached its present level.

The primary objectives pursued with the organization of the Festival are to contribute to the economic cooperation project of the countries of the Black Sea and within this context, to aid the promotion of Turkey in general and Black Sea region as well as Trabzon in specific, in the fields of culture and economy. The State Theatres is aware of the responsibility that they must bear as a leading institution and to be able to accomplish what this responsibility entails, they have undertaken the task of organizing an even better Festival than the ones held in the previous years. In this process the Ministry of Culture, State Theatres General Directorate, Trabzon Governor’s Office, Trabzon Municipality, Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Trabzon Commercial Stock Exchange, Black Sea Technical University, sponsoring firms, Trabzon State Theatre Directorate personnel have all acted together and such a platform for cooperative efforts was established.

Our Festival has not just been limited to the plays of the participating countries. Fashion shows displaying our traditional culture, menus promoting our regional cuisine were arranged and these were served to the guests. Furthermore, excursions were arranged to show to the guests the historical and scenic beauties of the city. Especially in the trips made to the Sumela Monastery, participants from different regions were mesmerized with the intricate historical structure of our city. The photograph exhibitions and music concerts performed by the local artists were also organized with the purpose of promoting Turkish culture and art.

Using the philosophy that there is no discrimination of religion, language, race, or sect as a stepping stone, and as a first in the history of Turkish Republic, Armenia was invited to the Festival together with its neighbor Azerbaijan. This has carried great importance as a reflection of the integration principle of art and festivals on how our country embraces peace, brotherhood and friendship.

In the year 2006, the boundaries of our Festival were expanded and its title was changed to “BLACK SEA THEATRE FESTIVAL” and as such the countries that are not in the Black Sea region were also invited to the event. In line with this understanding countries like Greece, Iran, France and Slovenia were invited to take part in the organization. To the 8th Festival that was organized, The People’s Republic of China was invited as a first. The countries that were invited to the Festivals have in return invited State Theatres of the Republic of Turkey to the organizations in their countries, in the following years, and this has given us the opportunity to participate in the organizations arranged to promote our country.

In addition to the foregoing, famous and world known directors and playwrights were invited to Trabzon and workshop studies were conducted with their participation. The artists from the participant countries have come together with the artists from Trabzon State Theatre as well as the local amateur artists and conducted joint work. The Dialogues and conferences that were held and the plays that were staged, were evaluated and criticized together.

The local and national press members were invited to the Festival and the promotion of Trabzon had a wide reach, thanks to the means of press and communication utilized.

The invitations extended to the countries and the entertainment and accommodation of the participants in the best possible way, carry great importance in terms of our political and commercial relations. The Festival, with regard to such considerations, is not only an event that is identified with the State Theatres but is also a Festival of the entire city. It is a known fact that the Festival is followed up closely and with great interest by the people of Trabzon as well as the theatre lovers in the countries located in the Black Sea Region. The Festival is especially valued and claimed as own by the young people of the city reflecting the contemporary facet of Trabzon. It can be seen that the people of Trabzon harbor the same positive feelings and interests towards the establishments and institutions that support and contribute to this Festival.

Besides the positive effect that the Festival has had on the provincial image of Trabzon and the Black Sea Region both on national and international scale, its significant contribution to Turkey, Black Sea and Trabzon has also been observed in this age that festivals has gained importance in the promotion of countries and inter-cultural communication.
