Festival Description | Since 1989 Dance Umbrella’s main objective is to bring African dance practitioners together. The Festival features both established and young artists, although the focus is primarily on young choreographers. New Dance commissions South African artists to present work, in addition African dance companies that may apply. The invited artists are chosen for the Festival from invitations after the organizers have seen either a DVD or performance (preferably of new original work). The program includes workshops, meetings and a dance program that runs for a period of about ten days. |

- 2011 Dance Umbrella, ‘Redha’s Giselle’
Choreographed by Redha and performed by the Tshwane University of Technology. Redha’s Giselle is set in apartheid South Africa and very looslely based on the classic ballet where boy meets girl. In Redha’s Giselle, however, the boy in question is on the opposite side of the colour divide and love all but runs smoothly. Their youthful and innocent love results in conflict, violence and even death. The dancers in this production are put through paces with tremendous energy and zeal, bashing violently and hurling one another with intense and often mad abandon until the immenent and fatal conclusion.
