Held for the first time in 1965, the festival programme usually comprises 100-130 different events, including concerts, theatre, and dance performances, art exhibitions, literary and film events, and a variety of seminars. Opportunities for participation by amateurs and professionals, children and adults alike - playing and performing side by side. The Festival offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a rich and varied menu of cultural fare. Primarily a forum designed to showcase the cultural life of the far north in all its diversity and to bring it to the attention of a wider audience, the nine-day festival aims to foster new ideas and encourage experimentation, while reflecting a spirit of optimism and initiative.
