Festival Description | The Bergen International Festival was founded in 1953 and has since focused on the presentation of prominent international and Norwegian artists in the field of music, ballet, opera, theatre, dance, folklore and other arts. The festival is the principal Norwegian manifestation of its kind and presents 150-200 events each year, within a period of 12 days. The festival is a member of the European Festivals Association and His Majesty King Harald V of Norway is the Royal Patron. The music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), performed at his home the Troldhaugen, has from the start been an important part of the festival. In addition to the main festival, separate fringe events are held, including the Children’s Festival, the Music Factory Contemporary Music Festival, Night Jazz International Jazz Festival, the Festival Exhibition and the Literature Festival. |
