Ten years ago, a new era of music and culture began in Austria, heralding the birth of springfestival, the biggest Austrian festival for electronic music and art. The Noughties have since seen springfestival evolve from a small local gathering into a global forerunner of clubture; a meeting place for live musicians, multiple electronic genres and clubbers alike, united for a long weekend of aural enrichment and cultural hedonism.
The festival takes place in Graz, the 2nd largest city in Austria, nestled around a lush green hill and a sparkling river, it combines Old World/Middle European charm with cutting-edge architectural feats in a most delightful and enchanting way. Cobbled streets wind their way around quirky houses of the “Old City” centre, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, only to arrive at mind-boggling gravity-defying futuristic structures, built when Graz was Cultural Capital of Europe in 2003.
Throw in cosy cafes, gorgeous parks and cheap shopping, and you get a city that is both cosmopolitan and intimate, tailored to the exacting demands of the 21st century urbanite. springfestival is much like the city; combining international and local, cosmopolitan and intimate, old and new, springfestival captures the music Zeitgeist by uniting electronic classics with fresh beats and guitar riffs.
|Festival Dates||May 16 - 20, 2012|
Alongside Graz’s finest underground clubs, springfestival boasts some truly breathtaking locations. A cave, nay a dome carved in the middle of a mountain; a spectacular fortress; a man-made steel and glass river island; and the “Friendly Alien” Museum of Modern Art are spectacular backdrops making for a unique audio-visual experience. The locations are scattered around the city centre, all within walking distance or catered for by a shuttle bus, making this a true urban festival for the 21st century in one of Europe’s most stunning cities.
Over the last few years, DJ legends have played back to back with indie darlings and emerging artists fill yet unnamed niches. Bands including The Gossip, The Streets, The Whip, Roisin Murphy; legends from the true ranks of greatness with Grandmaster Flash, Laurent Garnier and Goldie; drum’n’bass djs like DJ Marky, Roni Size, Alix Perez; old and young techno dons like Carl Craig, Derrick May, Ben Klock and Marcel Dettman; electro smashers like 2manydjs and Digitalism, mash-up masters such as Diplo, A-Trak and Sinden; dubstep heavyweights like Digital Mystikz, The Bug, Caspa; labels such as Warp, DFA, Ninja Tune, Ed Banger, Stones Throw, and many, many more, have all played, DJed, represented, enhanced and rocked it hard at springfestival.
For a perfect spring break, look no further than springfestival!
